Savannah Christian received the ball on the opening kickoff and proceeded to drive down the field for a touchdown and extra point. Wilcox then scored a touchdown on their possession but missed the extra point, leaving the Raiders with a 7-6 lead that continued into the third quarter. In the third quarter both teams would score touchdowns again, and the Patriots converted a two-point play that tied the game at 14. This trading of touchdowns continued into the fourth quarter where Wilcox again made a two-point conversion, taking the lead for the first time with the score at 22-21. The Patriot defense remained stout and forced the Raiders to punt, their first of the game. Wilcox took advantage and scored yet again with less than two minutes left. The game ended with Savannah Christian passing down the field but unable to stop the game clock because of no remaining timeouts. The Patriots won with a final score of 30-21.
On behalf of all of the faculty and staff in the Wilcox County School System, congratulation to the 2009 Patriot football team for a great season and many memorable moments! The 2010 season will begin with the Patriots not only defending their championship but also looking to extend a 23 game home winning streak that dates back to the 2006 season.

Released on December 8, 2009
ABBEVILLE, GA – The Wilcox County Board of Education approved a recommendation by Superintendent Steve J. Smith to adjust the calendar for the current school year to add three more furlough days for all employees. Bus drivers would have two more furlough days.
Smith proposed to shorten the school year by two student days, shorten post-planning for teachers from three to two days, and move post-planning into the slot created by shortening the school year. Graduation will remain on Saturday, May 22, 2010.
Under the proposal, the last day of school will be May 19, 2010 instead of May 21, and teachers will work May 20 and 21, 2010 for post-planning instead of working three days the following week. Their responsibilities for this school year will end at graduation.
Smith explained, “We continue to be concerned about declining revenues at the state level, and we are trying to be proactive. If the supplemental FY10 budget is not completed until April, our employees could experience huge reductions in one or two paychecks. By acting now, we are able to minimize the impact on our employees’ paychecks by spreading the furloughs over the next six months.”
Smith continued, “We have told our employees that a reduction-in-force is a last resort for our school system, and we pray that the Governor will announce no more than an additional three-day furlough once the legislative session begins. A cut to our state funding above what we are announcing would be devastating, and we will be forced to make some very tough decisions. Our class sizes have already grown well above desirable levels, and our teachers are working harder than ever.”
“I hope and pray the Governor and Legislature will act responsibly by creatively addressing this revenue crisis we now face at the state level. Their failure to act during the past session has made the problem worse, and election year politics could cause them to propose additional cuts instead of finding revenue sources to meet the needs of Georgians. Our children deserve better, and putting the burden directly on the backs of teachers and property owners is grossly unfair and short-sighted.”
“We will continue to fight for flexibility in funding sources at the local level, and we support three initiatives: 1) a statewide 1¢ education sales tax, 2) full restoration of the equalization grant, which helps the poorest systems in Georgia, and 3) allowing local school districts to pass an additional local SPLOST specifically for operations, which would allow for a local 1¢ sales tax for salaries and other non-construction costs. These same legislators who fight for states’ rights and reduced federal control refuse to grant local school districts rights related to funding sources and reduced state control. Until the voters stand up and voice their concerns, I fear more of the same for this legislative session. We do not have an expense problem in Georgia—we have a revenue crisis. We need the public’s help in contacting the Governor and the Legislature to support these initiatives.”
With this announcement, most employees will experience six furlough days during this school year, and students will attend school three less days. Despite the reduction in instructional days, students will exceed the minimum instruction time by anywhere from 900 minutes to 10,000 minutes for the year, depending upon grade level.
